Fellowship Opportunities--
Kristi Fleming, Vice President of Fellowship gives the report for upcoming fellowship and service events.
Mix It Up Day--
Present members that also attended the event share their experience. Pie-A-Kappan is the first subject to be brought up. Members agree that when this fundraising idea is used again, there needs to be one person in charge of deciding who gets to actually throw the pie. It was also mentioned that it should be the last event of the day because everybody seemed to disperse directly after. Vice President of Public Relations, Europe Doan, suggests that when planning Mix-It-Up Day for next year we try to contact the other clubs in person instead of through email because some clubs that said they were going to help didn't come. Vice President of Fellowship, Kristi Fleming, suggests that we need to communicate better with the clubs who are interested in helping to insure they will be at the event. Secretary, Brandi Husch, suggests we have some sort of incentive to get more students involved in the games. For example, if students want the free massages available by the Massage Therapy Club then they need to participate in a game. Present members agree that these are things that can be improved on for next year's event. Advisor, Adrienne Giffin, states that she feels that Mix-It-Up Day was a success and we met the goals of our mission statement. Present members agree that although there is room for improvement we had a fantastic day bringing students on campus together.
Team Building--
Vice President of Fellowship, Kristi Fleming gives information about the team building event on Veteran's Day (NO SCHOOL!!). It is at Touch of Nature near Giant City from 1pm until 4pm.Unfortunately, due to insurance purposes, this event has been canceled. We will now meet at the Giant City Visitor Center at 1:00pm to go hiking. Hope to see everyone there. If you have any questions, please feel free to email your Vice President of Fellowship, Kristi Fleming at [email protected].

Honors in Action (HIA) Update/Info: Theme 6: “Food Fight!: Competition and Food” Question #9: “How do guidelines, such as the USDA’s Food Pyramid and school lunch programs compete with or match parental/community food standards and/or realities?”
We've researched, but now it's time to compile the information and make something out of it! Secretary, Brandi Husch shares her idea of making a short nutrition “class” to teach to an elementary school students. Present members agreed that this is a good idea for our “action” part of the project. After brainstorming different ideas Vice President of Public Relations, Europe Doan, volunteers to contact Carterville's elementary school to set up a plate waste study. Then we will have this data to use when making the presentation for the “class” we are wanting to teach. Present, Anna Buetow, proposes we spend our entire meeting next week to start on the presentation and work on nothing but our Honors in Action project. All present members agree.
New Business:
Just a reminder to everyone now that the semester is coming to an end to save Wednesdays at 1:30-2:30pm on their calendars for the chapter's weekly meeting for the Spring 2014 semester. We would really enjoy seeing some new faces!
Also, President, Anna Buetow, informs members of the Regional and International events that will be coming up next Semester:
The first is Lincoln Lockin in Springfield, Illinois. It will be on Saturday, February 22 and Sunday, February 23. This event is a very fun one. It gives the Illinois Region, Phi Theta Kappa members a chance to meet and hang out while learning more about their region and Phi Theta Kappa. EVERYONE is encouraged to come along! Estimated cost for members interested in attending is $40.
The second is Phi Theta Kappa's annual International Convention. This convention will be held in Orlando Florida on Wednesday, April 23rd to Saturday, April 26th. This is a very fun opportunity for members to learn about Phi Theta Kappa on an International scale with so many other people. It is also one of the most expensive trips the chapter takes each year.
A head count soon for each event will help the Treasurer come up with an estimate of how much it will cost. PLEASE email at any time if you're interested. This does not mean you HAVE to go, but it does mean you're interested and would like more information.Anyone who is attends this event is responsible for AT LEAST their registration fee. This year's registration fee is $300.
**Please note: Conferences/events are paid for by both the chapter and the members who are attending. Unfortunately, money can be tight, so the chapter cannot provide a free ride for anyone. Those who are active in the Chapter's activities in any way will be taken into consideration as funds are available fore each conference/events, so participate and increase your chance of getting to join us on these exciting adventures! Also, please remember that anyone is able to attend. However, when chapter funds for events are being used, ones activity level may play a role in the relief of some of the costs for any member. Hopefully, this is understood. If not, please email President, Anna Buetow at [email protected] Thank you!
