College Project Success
For our 2013/2014 college project, we began by meeting with the President of John A. Logan, President Drieth, to see what he would like to see improved around campus. He informed us that John A. Logan’s completion rates were lower than he would like them to be, and he believes math classes have a great deal to do with this—if students cannot pass their math classes, they cannot complete their degrees.
After a session of brainstorming, we thought the best way to help students pass their math classes would be to promote the Student Success Center, and the FREE tutoring they offer right on campus. Throughout the project, noticed how few people were aware of the Student Success Center, and how even fewer knew they offered free tutoring—we set out eager to change that.
One of the most prevalent things we did to advertise the free services’ provided by John A. Logan is write, film, and produce and a video that would raise awareness of the services, and encompass the importance of using them.
We, then, set out to promote our video, and so far, it has been quite a success. The video plays on all of the closed circuit televisions at John A. Logan, and we have QR codes (links to the video that can be scanned by one’s smartphone) posted around campus. In addition, several teachers have shown this video during classes, and we currently have over 800 views and counting on YouTube. Not to mention, five Upsilon Pi officers had the opportunity to present our video to the college’s Board of Trustees; all board members were very impressed and supportive of our goal and progress.
We are also honored to announce that two weeks after publishing, our video got recognition from Phi Theta Kappa’s official Facebook Page! Their post read: “Need a good idea for a chapter project? The Upsilon Pi Chapter at John A. Logan College in Illinois produced a great video promoting the college's Student Success Center. See it at http://bit.ly/19KCafN
Keep up the excellent work Upsilon Pi!”
All in all, Upsilon Pi is very excited and humbled by this incredible journey, and so thankful for everybody who has helped us with this cause.
