The Kappan who raises the most money for Upsilon Pi will get themselves and their chosen students and faculty “pied” in the face. 10% of the chapter's fundraised earnings will be given to Oberndorf Lifeline to Completion Scholarship, which is a Phi Theta Kappa promoted scholarship with the goal of helping Phi Theta Kappans who are struggling financially to complete their degree.

Fellowship and Service Report:
Fellowship Opportunities--
Kristi Fleming, Vice President of Fellowship gives the report for upcoming fellowship and service events.
Mix It Up Day--
Mix It Up Day is Wednesday, October 30, from 10am until 2pm. Mix it Up Day's Mission/Goal: “To break down social barriers between students, teachers, clubs, and faculty, which could hinder their chances to make new communication lines with people, through activities such as ice breakers and music.”
Vice President of Fellowship, Kristi Fleming reports that yesterday evening she, along with Vice President of Public Relations got to attend the monthly Board Meeting. Together, they presented Mix-It-Up Day to the Board Members and explain how it is our college project from last year that we have revamped for this year. Vice President of Public Relations, Europe Doan took the opportunity to explain Pie-A-Kappan fundraiser and reports that the Board Members were very responsive and had a lot of great ideas for next year. One idea mentioned was to have a set amount of money we are trying to reach to get a volunteer pied. For example, if we raise $500- volunteer A gets pied. But if we raise $1000- volunteer A and volunteer B get pied. Another idea was to set a “cap” for each team. For example, if your team raises $500 you will get pied. All present members agreed that these were great ideas, but too late to implement for this fundraiser. Advisor, Adrienne Giffin suggests we try one of these ideas in the spring and also presents the duct tape idea. Other chapters have had a fundraiser where people would pay $1 per foot of duct tape and tape a volunteer to a tree. Adrienne also mentions that these meetings with the Board count towards our five star for reporting to the administration our activities.
President, Anna Buetow discusses what’s left in the planning process and goes over the tentative schedule. Members volunteer to bring items and all the last minute responsibilities are split up . I’ve attached the schedule for the activities at Mix-It-Up Day. If you have any questions please contact Kristi Fleming at[email protected].
Team Building--
More information next week.
Service Opportunities--
Food Drive--
About the Food Drive: Student Senate sponsors a food drive every year. They ask that the clubs create boxes to collect canned goods. The club that is the “best decorated box” will win $50. The club that collects the most food will win $100. Let’s make this the best!! The member who can get the most canned goods will be allowed to pick a Phi Theta Kappa prize that we have in stock on campus (i.e. coffee cup, key chain, honor cords..). All proceeds will go to JALC students in need as seen by the Financial Aid Office and other outlets through John A. Logan to reach local people in need.
Members who helped brainstorm Upsilon Pi’s box report that they decided on making our box like a box of ‘Nerds’ candy. All present members loved this idea and are very excited to move forward with working on this project. We will be working on our Nerds box next Wednesday, October 30th at 4:30-6:30pm in room B48. If you have any questions/comments please email Vice President of Public Relations, Europe Doan at [email protected].

Honors in Action (HIA) Update/Info: Theme 6: “Food Fight!: Competition and Food” Question #9: “How do guidelines, such as the USDA’s Food Pyramid and school lunch programs compete with or match parental/community food standards and/or realities?”
Secretary, Brandi Husch, reports that she met with nutritionist and John A. Logan professor, Paula Most to discuss our Honors in Action Project. Brandi states that she recorded the whole interview to share with anyone who would like to hear it. She reports that to most interesting piece of information that she took from this interview was that elementary schools are not required to teach any kind of nutrition because it isn’t a part of the core curriculum required like English and math classes. For that reason some nutritionist, such as Paula, have got together and made curriculums that take nutrition and add it to the required subjects that are a part of the core curriculums.
President, Anna Buetow, reminds members that anyone is able to do research at any time. Keep the Theme and Question in mind because you never know what will come up in your daily life that relates to it!
