Meeting Minutes for Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013
Call to Order:
President, Anna Buetow, calls the meeting to order at 1:30pm.

Fundraising Report:
Fundraising Coordinator, Ashlee Sanders, gives the fundraising report:
Hunting & Fishing Days Report –
Ashlee reports that we made $236 made at Hunting and Fishing Days. Dr. Dreith won the 50/50 raffle and donated his winnings back to Phi Theta Kappa. The Money raised will help the members who helped fundraise go to the upcoming conference in two weeks. Those who helped at this event share their experience. Members that helped with this event report they were surprised at the enthusiastic responses we received on our surveys for our Honors in Action project.
Bake Sale Report –
Ashlee also reports we made $39.73 this passed Monday's bake sale. Members who were able to help report that they had so much fun interacting with the students on campus. She also reminds member that we have a Halloween bake sale coming up on Thursday, October 31st at 10:30pm to 2:30pm.
Mix It Up Day--
Mix It Up Day’s date will be on October 23, from 10am until 2/3pm. Mix it Up Day's Mission/Goal: “To break down social barriers between students, teachers, clubs, and faculty, which could hinder their chances to make new communication lines with people, through activities such as ice breakers and music”
Vice President of Public Relations, Europe Doan, and Vice President of Fellowship, Kristi Fleming, report the Mix It Up Day planning with other clubs meeting is scheduled to be this Thursday, October 3rd at 3:00pm in B62.
Current Suggested Activity list:
•The Question Ball – Players sit in a circle, toss the ball to another player who then reads and answers the question their hand landed on.
• Duck, Duck, Fact – Players sit in a circle while another player goes around in a circle. The leader then tags a sitting player, but instead of saying “goose,” the player shouts a random fact about themselves.
•The Blinded Course – Players help their blind-folded, team player retrieve the most balls.
Pie-A-Kappan: Anna Buetow, Europe Doan, Ethan Edwards, Brandi Husch and possibly Kirsti Fleming and Will Safran will be participating in Mix It Up Day's fundraising opportunity, Pie-A-Kappan, with a Mix It Up Day Goal: “To get the heads of student clubs/organizations and faculty members to Mix It Up by volunteering to be pied in the face if their Kappan raises the most money for Upsilon Pi.” The winners will, hopefully, be “pied” in the face on Mix It Up Day. A Kappan may select up to two heads of student clubs/organizations and faculty member for this event. The Kappan who raises the most money for Upsilon Pi will get themselves and their chosen students and faculty “pied” in the face. 10% of the chapter's fundraised earnings will be given to Oberndorf Lifeline to Completion Scholarship, which a Phi Theta Kappa promoted scholarship with the goal of helping Phi Theta Kappans who are struggling financially to complete their degree. Participating members need to have their sponsors confirmed by Wednesday, October 9th.
Committee Report:
College Project report--
Another opportunity to enhance our College Project's goal: To promote the Student Success Center, particularly the Tutor room. Loganpalooza is Wednesday, October 9th from 9:30am-1:30pm. Every club that has a booth at Loganpalooza is asked to have an activity for students to complete to earn a stamp to earn the Student Senate prize. Present members decided that for our activity we will have students take a pamphlet we have made to the Student Success Center room and receive a sticker on the pamphlet to present back at our booth to get their stamp and a rice crispy treat. President, Anna Buetow, states that she will be there the entire event at the booth and other members are encouraged to come by and help at any time during the event. Anna also volunteers to make the pamphlet that we will use. Secretary, Brandi Husch, volunteers to make signs to make sure the students can find the Student Success Center. Vice President of Fellowship, Kristi Fleming volunteers to bring stickers. President, Anna Buetow, and Vice President of Membership, Ethan Edwards volunteer to make and bring rice crispy treats.
Scrapbooking Report--
Vice President of Public Relations, Europe Doan, reports that we will not be scrapbooking next week due to Loganpalooza going on at the same time. Members are reminded to keep a look out for any kind of clock stickers, stamps, and magazine pictures that will go with our scrapbook theme of “Time”.
Honors in Action Report--
Honors in Action (HIA) Update/Info:
Theme 6: “Food Fight!: Competition and Food” Question #9: “How do guidelines, such as the USDA’s Food Pyramid and school lunch programs compete with or match parental/community food standards and/or realities?”
Secretary, Brandi Husch, reports she is still working on contacting someone from the nursing department or a nutrition teacher from John A. to join us in a meeting. Brandi also volunteers to contact English teacher Charles Rudolph to join us for a meeting to get his advice on a successful research project.
Vice President of Public Relations, Europe Doan, and Vice President of Membership, Ethan Edwards volunteer to meet with Math teacher Scott Elliot to gain advice on how to handle statistics with the project. After they meet with Mr. Elliot they agree to report all information to the chapter.
President, Anna Buetow, reminds members that anyone is able to do research at any time. Keep the Theme and Question in mind because you never know what will come up in your daily life that relates to it!
New Business:
Official Orientation dates have been set for prospective members: Tuesday, October 15th at 3:30 to 4:30pm and Monday, October 21st at 12 to 1:30pm in B48. Also, Induction for new members will be Monday, October 28th at 6:00pm in the Tarvin-Crisp Conference Center room. ALL MEMBERS are welcomed to come to the induction and support and greet the new members!
The new member letters are needing to be put together so they can be mailed out. Present members decided that Monday, October 8th at 5:00pm in room B48 we will be stuffing the letters so we can get them sent out as soon as possible.
With Induction coming up, we need to get a vote for who our Honorary Inductees will be. Honorary Inductees are one Non-teaching Professional, Full Time Faculty, and Part Time Faculty that members get to nominate to be inducted as an Honorary Member of the Chapter. Those who are nominated at this meeting will then be voted on throughout the week. The winners will be asked to join us at Induction. Voting will start now and continue until Wednesday, October 9th at 12:00pm. Secretary, Brandi Husch, nominates Teri Campbell for Non-teaching Professional Honorary Inductee. Vice President of Public Relations, Europe Doan, nominates Tom Chandler for Full Time Faculty Honorary Inductee and Ken Gilbert for Part Time Faculty Honorary Inductee. President, Anna Buetow, nominates Roger Von Lanken for Part Time Faculty Honorary Inductee. Voting starts now and will end Wednesday, October 9th at 12:00pm. To vote please reply to this email with the names of the three Honorary Inductees you are supporting.
Anything else:
Our next weekly meeting on October 9th we will start the meeting 15 minutes late due to Loganpalooza. So on Wednesday, October 9th our meeting will be 1:45pm-2:30pm.
Phi Theta Kappa's Common Application for possible scholarship opportunities for the Fall Semester has now opened! To apply, log in to ptk.org and go to: http://www.ptk.org/become-a-member/scholarships
To close, I believe we need a friendly discussion on whether Upsilon Pi is pronounced UPsilion Pi or OOPsilon Pi. After the friendly and funny discussion present members agreed on OOPsilon Pi as the correct way to pronounce our Chapter name.
Also, we have currently changed the time of our weekly meetings to 1:30pm. Meetings will still be held in room B48. Remember, weekly meetings are for all members, even perspective members! Please join us, if you can! The more, the merrier. If you are unable to attend, keep up with the minutes and, hopefully, we will see you at future events!
