Hunting & Fishing Days (September 28th from 9:00am-5:00pm and 29thfrom 9:00am-4:00pm):
Hunting and Fishing Days is fast approaching and now that we have a booth reserved it is time to get things finalized. After some discussion we decided to have three different activities ready. The first activity is camouflage face painting for kids. President, Anna Buetow, volunteers to get the face paint that we will need. Our second activity is leaf and bark rubbing. Secretary, Brandi Husch, Vice President of Membership, Ethan Edwards, and Will Safran volunteer to bring leaves, bark, and crayons for this activity. The last activity is a memory game that President, Anna Buetow, and Vice President of Fellowship, Kristi Fleming are working together on. Fundraising Coordinator, Ashlee Sanders, makes a motion to have two separate raffles, a 50/50 raffle and also raffle off some donated items. All present members voted in favor of said motion. Ashlee also sent around a sheet for members to sign up for times that they can help at the booth. We will need help to set-up on Friday the 27th from 12:00pm-4:00pm. We are also taking volunteers to work at our booth during the event both Saturday and Sunday. If you want to sign up to help please contact Ashlee at[email protected].
Mix It Up Day:
Mix It Up Day’s prospective dates are October 16th or 23rd. At next week’s meeting we will be assigning members different clubs that they will be in charge of contacting about participating and their ideas for this year’s Mix It Up Day and will be discussing this in further detail. Fundraising Coordinator, Ashlee Sanders, is working on getting our Pie-A-Kappan fundraising event approved so we can start finding faculty to sponsor us. This will also be discussed next week in greater detail.
Committee Report:
College Project report--
Vice President of Public Relations, Europe Doan, passed around a form that she made for tutors at the Student Success Center to fill out to see how the students they tutor heard about the Student Success Center. We will use this feedback in our write-up for the College Project. On the form we ask the student’s name, how they found out about the Student Success Center, what courses they received help with, and the tutor’s signature. After the meeting Secretary, Brandi Husch, will take the form to Teri Campbell to get approved so we can start getting some data. Brandi also wanted to announce that our video has received over 1,000 views!! Europe reported that she has submitted a story about our college project to the Illinois Regional Phi Theta Kappa website.
Scrapbooking Report--
Scrapbooking Committee Head, Europe Doan, made a list of supplies needed before we could continue. President, Anna Buetow, has been working on that list and it is time to get working on the scrapbook again. The pictures for the August pages of the scrapbook were picked out at the last scrapbook meeting. Anna stated that we could have pictures printed out next week and asked Europe Doan to let her know what pictures were needed. Anna also asks fellow members to keep a look out for any kind of clock stickers, stamps, and magazine pictures that will go with our scrapbook theme of “Time”. *We will be scrapbooking next week Wednesday, September 18th at 12:30 in room B48.*
New Business:
Honors in Action (HIA) Update/Info:
Theme 6: “Food Fight!: Competition and Food” Question #9: “How do guidelines, such as the USDA’s Food Pyramid and school lunch programs compete with or match parental/community food standards and/or realities?”
Last week instead of our normal meeting we started research for HIA. Members that attended said they were able to find useful information by using Google as the search engine. Secretary, Brandi Husch, stated that using John A. Logan’s library search engine would probably get us more reliable articles and the articles we select will be readily available for us if we would like a hard copy or if there is just an abstract available on the search engine. President, Anna Buetow, reported that she researched how the government’s food standards came about and she found it interesting that the first food standards began primarily for economic reasons and the later health reasons. Vice President of Fellowship, Kristi Fleming, explained that to start off the research they all brainstormed ideas and then looked up different aspects of our question. Will Safran shared information that he found in his research of the time line of different standards that our government has used over the years that he found particularly interesting.
Vice President of Public Relations, Europe Doan, shared her idea on how to get some feedback from parents in our community on their views and experiences with lunches served at schools. She felt like setting up some kind of survey for our booth at Hunting and Fishing Days would be an ideal opportunity. All attending members agreed with this idea and starting brainstorming what kind of questions that will need to be asked on the survey. After an intense brainstorming session we came to the conclusion that we should have two different surveys. One would be specific for parents and ask if their child/children eat lunch at school or pack their lunch-why/why not, and also ask if they have anything they want to add. The other survey would be more geared for college students with no children and it would ask if they ate lunch or packed their lunch when they were in elementary school- why/why not, if you ate the lunch provided did you like the food- why/why not and also leave room for them to say something about their school lunch experience if they want.
We also brainstormed different opportunities that could survey people. President, Anna Buetow, had the idea to survey people at a Farmer’s Market to get one point of view. Secretary, Brandi Husch, suggested we if we do that at a Farmer’s Market than we need to also get the opposite side of the spectrum and spend a day at McDonald’s, or something of the like, and survey them as well. Advisor, Adrienne Giffin, stated that next Wednesday, September 18th, her office is organizing and the Administration is participating in a “Welcome Picnic” on campus in the court yard. The picnic is for all students and faculty at John A. Logan and the Administration will be serving hotdogs and chips for lunch from 11:30am-1:00pm. This would also be a great opportunity to have students fill out some surveys. Advisor, Adrienne Giffin, asked that we get the survey to her on Monday so we can get it approved by the picnic on Wednesday. Vice President of Membership, Ethan Edwards, and Vice President of Public Relations, Europe Doan, volunteered to work together to get a survey ready by then.
President, Anna Buetow, reminds members that anyone is able to do research at any time. Keep the Theme and Question in mind because you never know what will come up in your daily life that relates to it!
Anything else:
Adrienne Giffin joined us for our meeting today with very exciting news. After a change in her responsibilities and being “bit by the Phi Theta Kappa bug,” she realized that she had the time to be able to commit to being our Advisor. Attending members were more than excited to hear this fantastic news and are very grateful! It is sure to be a wonderful year for our Chapter!
Vice President of Public Relations, Europe Doan, brought to our attention that we need an official photographer to take pictures at events to use in the scrapbook. Member, Will Safran, volunteered his camera and time to fill this position and all attending members felt he would be a great fit for the job!
Congrats to our New VP of Membership, Ethan Edwards. Thank you as well, Will and Ethan, for both taking the opportunity to run for a position. Your interest in keeping the great opportunity of Phi Theta Kappa going means a lot to us all.
ALSO: A head count is needed for the upcoming Illinois Honors Institute / Leadership Conference. The conference will be Friday, October 11ththrough Sunday, October 13th. PLEASE say whether you are interested in going or not by next Wednesday, September 18th, so we can begin getting an idea about how much it will cost for members to attend the conference. Members do not have to be 100% sure that they are going, but please be fairly certain. Once we get an idea of about how much it will cost**, then members will need to decide if they can go or not.
**Please note: Conferences/events are paid for by both the chapter and the members who are attending. Unfortunately, money can be tight, so the chapter cannot provide a free ride for anyone. Those who help with fundraising will get some of their fee reduced from the amount of money fundraised, so participate in fundraising and increase your chance of getting to join us on these exciting adventures!
Also, we have currently changed the time of our weekly meetings to 1:30pm. Meetings will still be held in room B48. Remember, weekly meetings are for all members, even perspective members! Please join us, if you can! The more, the merrier. If you are unable to attend, keep up with the minutes and, hopefully, we will see you at future events!
Adjournment:
Before adjourning the meeting, President, Anna Buetow, thanks everyone who is able to make it to the meeting and hopes those not present are able to keep up with us on Facebook and Twitter.
Motion to Adjourn by Fundraising Coordinator, Ashlee Sanders
