Looking Ahead--
Alpha Psi Eta chapter at Parkland College near Champaign would like to invite us to a Summer Sport Social on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 12:00pm. Although taking the train seemed like a great adventure to begin with, it is not practical for our needs. We decided to car pool and members planning on going should be prepared to chip in on gas. They are asking for donations for Area 8 Special Olympics such as: softballs, baseball gloves, tennis balls, basketballs, stop watches, measuring tape (in meters), band-aids, medical supplies for medical bags, name tags, any types of pens, pencils, sharpie markers, binders, and calculators. If you are going, please bring a few items. And we are also accepting cash donations to buy items, as well.
New Business:
Secretary, Brandi Husch, explained it has been brought to her attention that several members would like to change the logo on at the bottom of the chapter emails. Vice President of Membership, Drew Hans, and Vice President of Fellowship, Kristi Fleming, volunteer to get a few ideas together and present them at the meeting next week.
The rest of the meeting will be spent in Brainstorming the different themes for our Honors in Action Project:
-Last year’s project:
Fundraising Coordinator/Treasurer, Ashlee Sanders, filled us in on last year’s project. Last year’s project was on emergency preparedness. They made a video on how to make a emergency kit, but it was about 20 minutes long and needed to be cut down to a shorter video. The shorter video was put online by Phillip Lane. Ashlee feels like they needed a way to let more people know about the video to be more successful. Vice President of Membership, Drew Hans, stated that he had heard former chapter President, Christina Boyce, explain the process at the Illinois Regional Convention. He recalled her saying that it all started with the storm in Harrisburg and the Disaster Relief not helping. They used a disaster preparedness book and interviewed local Meteorologist, Jim Razor.
-The Culture of Competition
After the recap of last year’s project we took turns reading “The Culture of Competition” by Susan Edwards. And before we started discussing this year’s themes Secretary, Brandi Husch, reminds all members to keep the end goal and ‘big picture’ of having a successful write up in mind as we try to decided what our area of research will be.
-Brainstorming this year’s themes and questions for exploration
As we went over the exploration questions of Theme 1, “It’s All in Your Mind: Foundations of Competition/ Competition and Psychology”, the idea of the factor of age and cheating were popular among members. Theme 2, “The Games People Play: Competition and Sports, Recreation and Games,” didn’t get much of a response from members. Theme 3, “Too Big to Fail, Competition and Economics,” was a popular theme amongst members and sparked a lot of ideas about comparing locally-owned businesses to national chains. Theme 4, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World: Competition and Politics,” the question of monetary cost of competition effects on political actions, had some positive feedback. Theme 5, “It’s a Small World: Competition and Geography,” got a lot of great discussion started about a ‘Northern Illinois vs. Southern Illinois’ treatment. To briefly sum it up, northern Illinois gets the state funding for schooling, roads, and parks, and southern Illinois gets the left-overs. We would take that issue and break it down further and get a more specific as the research guides us. Theme 6, “Food Fight!: Competition and Food,” brought up questions of competition of schools for funding and how the effects the nutrition of students. Theme 7, “One Small Step, One Giant Leap: Competition and Science, Math and Technology,” didn’t bring much of a response but on how mathematical game theory be used to study and predict. Theme 8,”Making the Grade: Competition and Education,” two questions received attention on how competition effects education and at what age is competition healthy. Theme 9, “I Know What I Like: Competition and The Arts,” didn’t seem to spark any interest from the present members. Theme 10’s, “Wait Until Next Year: History/Future of Competition,” question of the competition of the worlds resources in the future brought about a lot of discussion, as well. After all the themes were discussed, themes 3, 4, 6, and 8 seemed to be most popular with members. President, Anna Buetow, asked members to go over these themes and be prepared to discuss again in two weeks.
